Prevention and Treatment of Massive Obstetric Hemorrhage: Simulation Training Series

About the training series

The simulation training series Prevention and Treatment of Massive Obstetric Hemorrhage took place from 22 to 25 April 2025 at four clinical facilities in Odesa and Biliaivka.

The programme was organised by the Odesa Branch of the Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Ukraine as a practical continuing professional development activity for physicians and nursing staff. Participants could receive 15 CPD points after completing the required tasks and assessment.

A total of 135 participants worked in 22 multidisciplinary teams across the four training days.

Target audience and objectives

The training was intended for obstetrician-gynecologists, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, midwives and anesthesia nurses.

Participants practised clinical assessment, estimation of blood loss, timely diagnosis, selection of treatment tactics, uterine massage, uterine balloon tamponade, staged uterine devascularisation and infusion-transfusion therapy.

The programme focused on teamwork, emergency time management and coordinated care in delivery and operating rooms.

Training format

Each session lasted 5 hours and combined instruction, practical simulation, scenario-based analysis and debriefing.

Teams received separate emergency scenarios and provided care using simulation models while their actions were recorded. The recordings were then used to analyse teamwork, the quality of care, common errors and possible solutions.

Final assessment included practical skills evaluation, scenario-based tasks and testing.

Training dates and facilities

• 22 April 2025: Maternity Hospital No. 5, Odesa — 48 participants in 8 teams.
• 23 April 2025: Perinatal Care Centre, City Clinical Hospital No. 10, Odesa — 42 participants in 7 teams.
• 24 April 2025: Obstetrics and Gynecology Department No. 1, City Clinical Hospital No. 1, Odesa — 21 participants in 3 teams.
• 25 April 2025: Biliaivka Multidisciplinary Hospital — 24 participants in 4 teams.

Programme structure

Each training day followed the same structure:

• registration and opening remarks;
• explanation of the working procedure and theoretical preparation;
• team-based emergency scenarios in a delivery or operating room;
• video-assisted debriefing and analysis;
• assessment of acquired knowledge, competencies and practical skills;
• final testing.

Results

The training series strengthened multidisciplinary teamwork and practical readiness for massive obstetric hemorrhage. Participants rehearsed emergency algorithms and clinical procedures in conditions designed to reproduce real workplace scenarios as closely as possible.
