About the training series

The simulation training series Prevention and Treatment of Massive Obstetric Hemorrhage took place from 5 to 7 March 2024 at three maternity hospitals in Odesa.

The programme was organised by the Odesa Branch of the Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Ukraine as a practical continuing professional development activity. Participants could receive 15 CPD points after completing the required tasks.

Each hospital hosted 48 participants in 8 teams of 6. Across the series, 144 participants worked in 24 multidisciplinary teams.

Separate CPD event numbers were assigned to each facility:

  • Maternity Hospital No. 5 — 3701773;
  • Maternity Hospital No. 7 — 3701774;
  • Maternity Hospital No. 1 — 3701775.

Target audience and objectives

The training was intended for obstetrician-gynecologists, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, midwives and anesthesia nurses.

Participants practised clinical assessment, estimation of blood loss, timely diagnosis, treatment planning, uterine massage, intrauterine balloon tamponade, infusion-transfusion therapy and emergency teamwork.

Training format

Each session lasted 5 hours and combined theoretical instruction, simulation scenarios, video-assisted debriefing and final assessment.

Teams received separate emergency scenarios and provided care in delivery rooms or operating theatres. Their actions were recorded and reviewed to assess teamwork, response time, quality of care, common errors and possible solutions.

  • 7 March 2024: Maternity Hospital No. 1 — 48 participants in 8 teams.

Programme structure

Each training day included registration, opening remarks, theoretical preparation, team-based emergency scenarios, video-assisted debriefing, assessment of knowledge and practical skills, final remarks and certificate distribution.

Results

The series strengthened multidisciplinary readiness for massive obstetric hemorrhage. Participants rehearsed diagnosis, blood-loss assessment, conservative hemorrhage-control methods and intrauterine balloon tamponade in workplace-based simulation conditions.
